I tend to steer away from any discussions of the political. Sometimes I think it might be that maybe the person who I’m speaking with may be more informed. Really, it’s a good possibility they are. More often than not I just avoid it because inevitably someone will end up getting pissed off. Over what? Another person’s opinion.
Today I’ll share with you a little bit of my opinion. I am not going to tell you who to vote for or even who I will vote for. You can heed my advice or ignore it. That’s entirely up to you. Today I want to bring up the issue of “going there”. What I mean is, if you are going to bring it up, throw out your two cents, your opinion, please PLEASE make a point that is relevant! Don’t worry, I have examples.
While I was working the other day, someone point blank asked me who I was voting for. Me, being the person who avoids conversations like that, ESPECIALLY at work, responded in the most civil (and vague) way I could. I replied, “This race has had me exhausted since the caucuses and I can’t say I’ve liked some of the things said on either side”. I was hoping to leave it at that. Nope! The response that I got was something to this effect… “Well, I’m voting for Obama because Palin’s a bitch and I can’t stand her, even though she’s hot”. I may have commented on Plalin’s abilities as a public speaker to which I got the response, “Her voice isn’t as annoying as Hillary’s. God! I hate Hillary.”
I’ve also had people share with me that they are voting for Obama because he’s black, to which I argue that he’s not black but bi-racial. The reception to that comment usually involves a blank stare or more discussion of a “brother” being the next President. Nothing was mentioned of platform or credentials.
When Hillary was a candidate I heard more about how her hair was done, her make-up, and her wardrobe than I did about the issues she was arguing!
Do you see where I’m going with this? I’m not anti-politics, I’m anti-ignorance or at least anti-talking to me about your political opinions!
I beg everyone, the outspokens and the people like me, to PLEASE educate yourself on the issues so you can make a well informed decision. Don’t vote for the person just because your boyfriend or girlfriend is voting for them, or because the person is black or white. Don’t choose them because the person is a man or a woman, or you think the person is a bitch and don’t like the way they dress. Don’t base your opinion or decision on the fact that your favorite celebrity endorses this candidate. Please, please, please inform yourself so you vote for the candidate who is right for you, and don’t go there unless you have something intelligent to say.
